History of Southern Illinois Made Expo
The Southern Illinois Made Expo (SI Made Expo) was established in 2018 as a regional
initiative designed to promote economic development, tourism, and local business growth
across Southern Illinois. Created through a partnership led by State Senator Dale Fowler
and supported by Southern Illinois Chambers of Commerce, the Expo was envisioned as a
platform to showcase the wide range of products, services, and destinations unique to the
region.
From its inception, the event has combined business promotion with community impact. In
addition to providing a marketplace for local vendors and organizations, the SI Made Expo
has consistently supported veteran-focused charities, making philanthropy a central part of
its mission.
The inaugural Expo in 2018 quickly demonstrated strong community interest and
participation. By its second year in 2019, the event had grown substantially, featuring more
than 150 exhibitors and attracting thousands of visitors to The Pavilion in Marion, Illinois.
The Expo created a dynamic environment where attendees could shop, sample products,
and engage directly with business owners, while also learning more about Southern Illinois
tourism opportunities.
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the Expo in 2020 and 2021, forcing organizers to cancel
or adapt the event into virtual formats. Despite these challenges, the organizers maintained
the event’s presence and mission, supporting local businesses during a difficult economic
period.
In 2022, the SI Made Expo returned to an in-person format, signaling a renewed period of
growth and enthusiasm. Since then, the event has continued to evolve, including
adjustments in scheduling format and the introduction of themed experiences such as
“Christmas in July” to encourage seasonal shopping and increase attendance.
Today, the SI Made Expo is widely recognized as one of Southern Illinois’ premier events for
local products, destinations, and businesses. It brings together artisans, manufacturers, food
producers, and tourism organizations to showcase the best the region has to offer. The
event provides direct-to-consumer sales opportunities, fosters business connections, and
promotes regional pride.
Beyond its economic impact, the Expo has made a measurable difference in the community.
Since its founding, it has raised more than $400,000 for veteran-focused charities, including
Honor Flight of Southern Illinois and other service organizations. This ongoing commitment
to supporting veterans has become a defining characteristic of the event.
Over time, the SI Made Expo has established itself as a signature annual event in Southern
Illinois, reflecting the strength, creativity, and collaboration of the region. Its continued
success underscores the importance of investing in local businesses and celebrating the
unique culture and resources of Southern Illinois.
